Hikkaduwa, a coastal town in the southwest of Sri Lanka, has emerged as a beacon for surfing enthusiasts around the globe. Known for its stunning beaches and vibrant coral reefs, Hikkaduwa offers more than just picturesque landscapes; it’s a surfing haven with waves that call out to surfers of every level.

The Allure of Hikkaduwa’s Waves

The surf in Hikkaduwa is renowned for its variety and consistency. With waves ranging from gentle, rolling swells perfect for beginners to more challenging breaks for the seasoned surfer, Hikkaduwa caters to all. The best time to surf here is from November to April when the water is warm, and the waves are at their peak.

Unlike other surf spots in Sri Lanka, which might offer beginner or advanced waves, Hikkaduwa provides a perfect mix, setting it apart as a versatile surfing destination.

Getting to Hikkaduwa

Reaching this surf paradise is straightforward. Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport is the nearest airport, from where you can take a taxi, bus or train to Hikkaduwa.

If you go via Taxi, there are two routes:

The Highway

The highway route is ideal for those eager to hit the waves as soon as possible. It’s the faster way to reach Hikkaduwa, incredibly convenient after a long flight or if you’re on a tight schedule. This direct path cuts through the Sri Lankan landscape, showing the country’s varied terrains. You’ll have to pay a highway toll on top of your taxi fare, but this route significantly reduces travel time, getting you to your destination promptly and efficiently. The journey time is around 2 hours.

The Coastal Route

Alternatively, the scenic coastal route is for those who prefer a journey about more than just the destination. This slower but far more enriching route allows travellers to witness the beauty and daily life along Sri Lanka’s coastline. As you travel parallel to the ocean, you’ll be treated to stunning sea views, interspersed with local towns and markets that invite exploration. This path is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in Sri Lankan culture and take in as much of the scenery as possible. Other towns like Bentota and Kosgoda are worth stopping at along the way. Bentota is enticed by its golden beaches and opportunities for water sports, while Kosgoda offers a heartwarming experience with its sea turtle conservation efforts. This trip can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours.

Transportation Tips: If you’re up for driving in Sri Lanka, renting a car, tuk-tuk, or scooter allows you to explore at your own pace.

Via Train

You can get the train Hikkaduwa from two stations in Colombo:

Colombo Fort Railway Station: This is the primary and most central station in Colombo, serving as the main hub for intercity and commuter trains. It offers frequent services to Hikkaduwa, making it a convenient choice for most travellers.

Maradana Railway Station: Located just a couple of kilometres from Colombo Fort, Maradana Station is another central station in Colombo. Some trains to the southern parts of Sri Lanka, including Hikkaduwa, start from here or pass through this station.

The trains’ end destination that stops in Hikkaduwa is Galle or Matara. You can find the timetables here.

Via Bus

There are regular public bus services that operate between Colombo and Hikkaduwa. These buses can be caught from the Bastian Mawatha Private Bus Terminal near Pettah Market. The bus number is #2 and takes around 3 hours.

It’s also possible to take the highway bus to Galle and then get a taxi from Galle back up to Hikkaduwa. The taxi journey takes around 30 minutes.
